Japanese Day at Chiddingstone Castle

7 July 2013 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Join us for our ever popular annual celebration of Japanese crafts and culture. This year we shall be including demonstrations of Kyudo (Japanese archery); Tameshigiri and Iai (Japanese sword arts) and Shodo (calligraphy). There will also be beautiful Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging) to admire and Shakuhachi and Shinobue (Japanese flute playing) to listen to in the Great Hall, played by specialists dressed in Kimono. Taiko drumming will also be demonstrated outdoors. The Castle will also have on display a Japanese Shogi board, especially loaned from the Horniman Museum to celebrate the Japan400 anniversary. As ever, within the Castle we shall of course have on display our remarkable collection of Samurai armour and swords, and the Japanese lacquer collection that has featured recently on the BBC in episdoes of Flog It!, Bargain Hunt and Inside Out.

Chiddingstone Castle’s annual celebration of Japanese crafts and culture fits perfectly with the Japan400 anniversary and celebrations. The Castle’s collection of Japanese lacquer, armour and swords have long been popular with visitors from the UK and Japan, and have been admired by friends from the Japan Embassy, the Japanese Society and the Japanese Garden Society – to name a few! Our close relationship with Japan has been further enhanced by the planting and dedication of a memorial cherry tree orchard in the grounds to commemorate those who lost their lives in the tragic earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

Tickets are: £8.00 per adult; £4.00 per child; £21.50 per family (2+2 or 1+3)
