10 July 2013 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

As part of the World Music Underground Summer Season at the Brunel Museum in Rotherhithe, Hibiki Ichikawa, a virtuoso Tsugaru Shamisen player, and Akari Mochizuki, a Japanese blues and folk singer, will showcase some wonderful Japanese folk music and songs mainly from the Tohoku region, in the North Eastern part of Honshu. Hibiki Ichikawa is the only professional player of the Tsugaru Shamisen in Europe: expect both solo & duo performances of ‘Minyo’ folk songs, when he’ll be accompanied by Akari Mochizuki, whose astonishingly powerful vocals will send you to the mountains and seas of the Far East.

We are inviting these two highly talented Japanese musicians to play in our extraordinary underground concert hall, hidden underground in the historic riverside village of Rotherhithe, close to the heart of London and rich in its history of trade with the rest of the world.

The performance will take place 50 foot underground in the spectacular and highly original Brunels’ Thames Tunnel Shaft. Bring an extra layer as the temperature is cooler than above ground. Enter by bending low through a short tunnel and descending a solid scaffold staircase. We regret there is no wheelchair access. There will be a cash bar available, with eats made by MasterChef winner Julie Friend.

Doors open at 7pm to start at 7.30pm.  For Tickets (£10 in advance; £12 on the door) please see this website:  http://www.wegottickets.com/brunelmuseum

For how to get here please see the Brunel Museum website
