A lecture by Professor Timon Screech, Professor of the History of Art, Head of the School of Arts(SOASOAS), SOAS, at the University of London.

William Adams is very well known as Miura Anzin in Japan. This event explains his training, the circumstances under which he reached Japan and came to be a trusted adviser to Shougn Iyeasu and the impact of Adams’ activities on Japan -British relations which led to the start of offcial relations by the Shogun and King James 1.

By focusing on the first English who served the Shogun Ieyasu as officially appointed Samurai, this event tells how Japan-Britsh relations were forged in the beginning and laid the foundations for the start of official relations.
