Kaminari UK have teamed up with prolific York poets Oz Hardwick and Amina Alyal to bring you ‘Tanka and Taiko’. An energetic show of both powerful and subtle rhythmic taiko beats entwined with thought provoking and epic Tanka poetry with special guests Michael Graham on Koto / Shamisen and Anna Plews on Shinobue.
“The group on stage are experts at what they do, and what they do is send a beautiful, thumping rhythm through the whole auditorium.” – The Pickled Egg (essential what’s on guide for Ilkley)
Kaminari UK are a Taiko (Japanese drumming) group from York who both compose their own contemporary pieces and play traditional Japanese pieces. All of our members and guest performers are British, although a few of us have been taught our techniques and skills in Japan.
We play live shows to bring the energy of Taiko and an element of Japanese culture for the British public to experience. Both the poets reciting the Tanka poetry and guest musicians on koto, shamisen and shinobue add to the feel and cultural aspect of out Tanka and Taiko show.
