The Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2013 is a prime example of the excellence achieved through cultural relationships between Britain and Japan. One of the most visited architectural exhibitions in the world, the Serpentine commissions architects who have never built in the UK before to design a Pavilion each year. Sou Fujimoto’s Pavilion celebrates and fosters the spirit of discovery and mutual regard that has, and continues to, inspire successful collaborations between two societies on opposite sides of the world.
In this talk, Sou Fujimoto will discuss the influences and inspiration behind his incredible Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2013 – consistently ranked as one of the most visited architectural exhibitions in the world. An architectural marvel, occupying some 350 square-metres of lawn in front of the Gallery, Fujimoto’s delicate, latticed structure of 20mm steel poles will have a lightweight and semi-transparent appearance, like a cloud resting on the lawn.
Fujimoto is the leading light of an exciting generation of architects who are re-inventing our relationship with the built environment. Fujimoto, the youngest ever architect to be commissioned by the Serpentine to design a Pavilion, has worked extensively in Japan and internationally, creating delicate and sensitive buildings such as his beautiful House NA.
The Serpentine are delighted to be the first to commission Fujimoto to build a structure in the UK and are excited at the prospect of experiencing and learning about his magnificent contemporary Japanese architectural structure in more detail.
