Otomo Yoshihide is one of the most important musicians of the Japanese underground/avant-garde. He moves between free jazz, noise, improvisation, composition and the unclassifiable with a generosity that opens up the possibilities for expression in all of the constellations with which he’s involved. The friday night will see him in a quartet with John Butcher, John Edwards and Mark Sanders plus a quintet set where they’ll be joined by saxophonist Mats Gustafsson.
The second night will be a quartet with Daichi Yoshikawa, Guillaume Viltard and Rie Nakajima where they will all be positioned around the space. That evening will also open with a reprise performance of Otomo’s magnificent solo for piano which he’s only done on a handful of occasions.
Since opening back in 2008 Café OTO has forged strong links with Japanese musicians. A central vehicle for this has been our ongoing residency programme. These residencies have involved Japanese musicians playing multiple nights in the venue collaborating with UK based musicians often for the first time.
This residency with Otomo is part of that ongoing tradition. Otomo has played at OTO many times including several past residencies. This residency is an opportunity for him to continue and develop a number of important relationships with London based musicians. This spirit of cultural exchange feels in keeping with Japan 400.
