The Oto asobi Project is a group of musicians, music therapists, individuals with learning disabilities and their families who started music-making workshops in 2005 at Kobe University in order to explore new musical expression. The group have played with many of the leading figures from the Japanese improvised music scene. For these concerts they will be joined by Otomo Yoshihide one of the most important figures in japanese experimental music. Additionally the band will be joined by Seymour Wright and Eddie Prevost. As well as the performances we will be screening a documentary about the group as well as hosting a Q & A.

Since Cafe OTO was founded back in 2008 we have consistently presented the work of Japanese musicians. Central to this has been establishing an ongoing relationships between the venue and musicians in Japan, many of whom have returned to OTO many times. Often these performances have taken the form of residencies across multiple nights and involved new and ongoing collaborations with UK based players. This ongoing cultural exchange between Japanese musicians, Cafe OTO and UK based players seems in keeping with the spirit of Japan 400.
