A unique opportunity to experience Noh Theatre through performance.
Noh Training Project UK, now in its third year, is a unique three-week workshop offering intensive, performance-based training in the dance, chant, music and performance history of Japanese classical Noh drama.Led by noh specialist Richard Emmert, the workshop will provide comprehensive training in classical Japanese noh performance, in English, to beginners and those with prior experience. Noh, one of the oldest continuing stage arts, combines highly stylized dance, chant, music, mask, story and costume with intense inner concentration and physical discipline, creating a uniquely powerful theatrical experience.
The Project is open to anyone with an interest in Noh: actors, directors, dancers, musicians, students and academics interested in extending their performance skills are encouraged to apply.
Noh Training Project UK’s workshop programme was founded in 2011 with the following aims:
+ To give participants from the UK the opportunity to understand Noh theatre through practical studies, facilitating an understanding of an important form of Japanese culture through active participation. This makes NTP UK a unique contribution to the UK’s theatre education resources.
+ Culture: To promote UK-Japan understanding through performance, and to build a greater awareness of this influential theatrical form.
+ Creative Practice: To work towards building a group of core UK-based performers with the skills to stage Noh plays in the UK, and use noh techniques to enrich their own artistic work.
