A Unique Opportunity to Make Traditional Japanese Lacquer Art with Artisans. An exhibition of artworks created using traditional and innovative Japanese maki-e techniques. Shokan Matsuda is a Japanese maki-e lacquer artisan, a descendant of traditional maki-e craftsmen in Fukui, founded Maki-e Studio SHOKAN in 2005, in Aoyama, central Tokyo. Its purpose is to convey the beauty of maki-e to the world and to pass down the traditional techniques of decorating wooden objects in this way. During the exhibition period, a series of workshops will be hosted Shokan Matsuda and eight of his apprentices, artisans of Maki-e Studio SHOKAN.The purpose of this project is to introduce Japanese culture and craft art, beauty of maki-e and the traditional techniques through an exhibition at the art college campus and a series of mini workshops.
Through our workshops we will highlight the beautiful simplicity of this most traditional of Japanese arts in order to foster a fresh international following and appreciation for such works and to help prevent these ancient skills from dying out.
Many British people have a vague concept of maki-e art and this project will provide a way for people living in the UK to gain a greater level of understanding, and by participating for themselves they will create their own maki-e art to keep forever. Capacity for 90 participants in London and 15 participants in Oxford will enable up to 105 people to experience creating their own maki-e, and promotion of cross-cultural understanding.

The exhibition is free, however booking for the workshops is essential and there is a fee to cover material costs. Costs vary depending on materials chosen and objects used.
