Hokusai Exposed is an immersive exhibition experience showcasing the stunning work of Katsushika Hokusai, one of the world’s greatest and most inspirational artists. It is also a showcase of a new and thought-provoking concept in the world of art viewing: “re-create”.
Developed by an award-winning Japanese author and scientist, “re-create” is the process of creating artwork again,
with the new artwork appearing just as the original would have done when it was first painted or printed. The colour and detail that have been lost in the passing of time are restored, thanks to cutting-edge digital imaging technology, re-creating a “new” work that links the artist of the past to the audience of the present. Visitors can also delve into a dimly lit underground world of ghosts and girls, and enjoy a projection mapping installation that presents a beautiful interpretation of Hokusai’s re-created works and world of art.
Katsushika Hokusai is an iconic artist with cross-generational and cross-genre appeal. His work, particularly the Great Wave off Kanagawa, remains immediately recognisable to many British people today—especially those who live near the Camberwell Great Wave mural. The Hokusai works at this event are the product of “re-create”, a new concept and technology born in Japan, This combination of the cutting-edge and the time-honoured, of old and of new, is showing in a location popular with young creatives. The aim is to allow a new generation of British artists and art viewers to be
(re)inspired by the Japanese master Hokusai.
