This first workshop, Throwing and Moulding Bowls will be for 5 days from 13-17 May 2013 and is the first of two workshops with Jill Fanshawe Kato in the beautiful surroundings of Coombe Farm Studios in Devon. Jill is a ceramic artist who trained in Japan and continues to successfully exhibit there with over forty exhibitions.
Each workshop course will feature Japanese making methods, samples of Japanese pottery from the tutor’s personal collection, visual materials, magazines and DVD’s about Japanese pottery. Courses are suitable to all levels of experience, beginners to advanced. Students will make pottery that is both useful and beautiful.
Jill Fanshawe Kato is an internationally renowned ceramicist & lecturer, who trained for four years in Japan and exhibits widely both in the UK and Japan where she has had over 40 exhibitions. She writes regularly for ceramics, craft & design publications and taught at Goldsmiths College for many years. Jill has been teaching ceramics at Coombe Farm Studios for over 13 years and regularly exhibits at the gallery at Coombe and all over the world. With a life long love of nature Jill is well known for her use of stylised birds, fish and plant forms and abstract blocks of colour inspired from her travels and her study of Japanese pottery. Having developed many links with Japan and the ceramic ethos of her training there it’s culture strongly shapes her practice. Jill’s ceramics range from functional pottery to large sculptural pieces. Her love and passion for clay makes Jill an excellent teacher with a strong interest in developing original creativity.
The second workshop Kiln to Table, will be held in the same space for 3 days from 13 to 15 September.
